SUMIDOURO

Created in 1964, the Sociedade Musical 31de Dezembro is among the oldest musical groups in Sumidouro. This ensemble plays traditionaly during the village party. It also oganizes the teatching of music.

PLASTIC ARTS

Almost unknown in Sumidouro Mr. Manoel FELIX is a talentfull sculptor. Without any academic art formation he developed a personal style. He works only the wood.

LITERATURE

In spite of its scarcity Sumidouro holds a colection of native literary works. The first person to be mentioned is Rosinéia CORGUINHA whose poetry is an exemple of highleveled creativity. Her work begun in 1983 with Album de Poesias issued by the Manuel Bandeira Project . In 1999 a new book has been published : Bem Dito é o Fruto (see NEWS).

Recently a memory book intitled Azas Pandas by Esmael Luiz RIBEIRO has been issued. He tells anecdotal stories of Sumidouro.

Since 1980, every year a poetry competition is organized by the members of Manoel Bandeira Project.

HERITAGE

An association to preserve the Casarão (among the oldest village houses) organizes every year an event to draw on its cause the public attention in order to preserve this 19th century heritage.

FOLKLORE

Some amateur groups plays folk dances during religious celebrations like St. John's day.

The Project is splited in six subprojects, in order to fulfill the possibilities of every class, school and region.

Its chief goals are :

a) Generals

1. Diffuse among the primary and secondary schools diferent kinds of poetry.
2. Develop the concept that the literature, the painting, the music, the esculpture, etc. are diferent ways of expression of a same art and , therefore, they should not be treated separetedly.
3. To encourage the poetic creation.

b) Specifics

1. To approach the Comunication e Expression as a whole.
2. To highlights the word, the gesture, the sound, the colour, the shape, as ways of expression and comunication.
3. To show that the poetic text is not limitate to the verse.
4. To show that the words may related to colours, sounds, mouvements, etc.
5. To awake the love of reading poetic worksof brazilian authors.
6. To show that the poetic work is a response of the artist to the surrounding world, which can act on this world, i.e., the poetic work is way of communication for the artist with the world.
